Community Issues affecting the Eyre Peninsula
& Far West Regions
My campaign doesn’t begin with a fixed policy agenda.
The direction for Flinders isn’t about me: it’s about our people, our families, our businesses and towns, and what we decide together.
I know our communities face real challenges, and I’m here to listen, to understand, and to fight for better outcomes and a stronger future for our region.
Communities across the Eyre Peninsula and Far West are resilient, resourceful, and deeply connected to the land and industries that sustain them. But living in regional and remote South Australia also brings challenges that deserve genuine attention, meaningful consultation, and practical, place‑based solutions.
These are some of the key issues affecting our region today:
Health Care Access
Residents across the Eyre Peninsula and Far West face long wait times, limited local services, and the ongoing need to travel hundreds of kilometres for specialist appointments. Travel and accommodation costs add significant pressure to families already dealing with health concerns. Workforce shortages in nursing, allied health, and mental health continue to strain local hospitals and clinics. Communities need more accessible, locally delivered services that reflect the realities of regional life.
Aged Care & Home Support
Our region has a rapidly ageing population, yet aged care options remain limited. Many older residents are forced to leave their communities to access appropriate care. Workforce shortages, restricted home support, and a lack of flexible, culturally appropriate services place increasing pressure on families and carers across the Eyre Peninsula and Far West.
Housing Availability & Affordability
There is a severe shortage of rental properties and affordable homes across the region. Infrastructure constraints - including power, water, and sewer capacity - slow new development and limit downsizing options for older residents. This bottleneck affects community growth, workforce attraction, and the stability of local industries.
Youth Services & Opportunities
Young people in the Eyre Peninsula and Far West face limited access to school‑based counselling, early intervention mental health support, and structured youth programs. Many towns lack youth hubs or safe spaces that foster connection, belonging, and positive development. Strengthening youth services is essential to supporting the next generation.
Mental Health Support
There is a significant gap in medium‑intensity, locally delivered mental health services across the region. Long wait times, limited crisis support, and the need to travel for ongoing care create barriers for people already under stress. Rural and remote communities experience unique pressures, and our mental health system must reflect that.
Industry & Environmental Decision‑Making
Decisions affecting fishing, aquaculture, agriculture, mining, and tourism are often made in Adelaide without meaningful consultation. These top‑down approaches can have real consequences for local families, workers, and businesses. The Eyre Peninsula and Far West are home to pristine environments and industries that rely on them. Communities want transparent, honest conversations and a direct role in shaping how their land, waters, and livelihoods are managed.
Cost of Living & Essential Services
Higher fuel, freight, and grocery costs continue to impact households across the region. Limited public transport, childcare shortages, and rising insurance premiums add further pressure. These challenges affect families, workers, and retirees right across our region, from Nullarbor to Port Lincoln and every town in between.
